Rosalía producer focuses on the silence between the notes: “Haunting minimalism” (The Guardian)
EUROPALIA ESPAÑA: art as force to fight polarisation
EUROPALIA celebrates its 30th edition this autumn with a large-scale Spanish biennale. Their original mission still holds true today, more than ever: to bring people and cultures closer together through art. More info on the full programme can be found here.
AB will host EUROPALIA ESPAÑA for three days in a row, with (contemporary) flamenco as the focal point. Signed up: electronica meets flamenco act Yeli Yeli & ROMERO (Wednesday 3 December 2025), flamenco legend Lole Montoya or ½ Lole Y Manuel (Thursday 4 December 2025) and Rosalía producer Raül Refree (Friday 5 December 2025).
(Raül) Refree presents El Espacio Entre
Raül Refree – previously a guest at AB during BRDCST in 2019 – must be just about one of the most lauded Spanish producers of the past decade. Through his collaboration with worldwide star Rosalía and flamenco singer El Niño de Elche, Refree stands at the helm of nuevo flamenco. Then he got his teeth into the oeuvre of Amália Rodrigues, together with Portuguese fado singer Line. But then he has also worked with former Sonic Youth member Lee Ranaldo.
Raül Refree also focuses on his own work, which has resulted in several film soundtracks and his most personal project to date: Refree. His latest album El Espacio Entre is about “The importance of the micro, the fullness of silence”, he says. Or: the silence between the notes. The Guardian more than rightly described this album as “haunting minimalism”.
What can we expect? Refree: “An immersive show where acoustic instruments, such as the piano or the flamenco guitar are mixed with samplers and textures that together with the orchestral percussions bring the concert from tradition to contemporary music. All this set with projections created by AI and an atmospheric lighting design.”
Line-up:
Refree: piano, samplers, flamenco, electric guitar
Núria Andorrà: percussion
