Sound art that pushes the boundaries of listening
ConcertThe Canadian composer and artist Stefan Maier is originally from Vancouver, a city situated on the traditional, unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations.
In his multimedia installations, performances, texts and compositions, Stefan Maier uses sound as a medium for exploring possible worlds. His practice explores the instability and resilience of matter, tracing the movement of sound through buildings, acoustic devices, instruments, software and bodies.
Guided by this fascination with the properties of sound, Stefan Maier brings to light buried stories, sonic fictions and new ways of listening, perceiving and creating. At the crossroads of composition, research and speculation, his practice invites the audience to perceive sound as a living material, in a state of perpetual transformation.
In recent years, Stefan Maier’s work has been presented by, amongst others, the INA-GRM and the Festival d’Automne in France, the Julia Stoschek Foundation, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Germany and the Norwegian Ultima festival. His recent albums have been released on renowned labels such as Portraits GRM, Dinzu Artefacts, ETAT and Superpang. New releases are planned on the Mappa and XKatedral labels.
With his unique approach to sound and space, Stefan Maier is part of a generation of artists who are constantly pushing the boundaries of contemporary music and sound art.
Yuki Nakagawa is a composer and cellist from the Kyoto/Kansai region. As a self-taught cellist, he has developed a distinctive artistic practice that brings together composition, performance, extended playing techniques and electronics.
He approaches the cello as an ‘instrument for producing vocal sounds’ and explores its possibilities far beyond the instrument’s traditional role. Using percussive playing techniques, physical movements and homemade bows, he creates unstable textures, drones, noise and resonances reminiscent of the human voice.
Since 2022, he has formed the duo KAKUHAN with Koshiro Hino. With this project, he has performed at festivals such as Rewire, Unsound, Moers Festival, Intonal, OUT.FEST and No Bounds.
His solo debut, ‘Stills and Remains’, was released earlier this year on the Dutch label Unheard of Hope.
