Jozef Dumoulin & Eric Thielemans present DAIMON
With DAIMON, two key figures from the Belgian jazz, improvisation and experimental scene are joining forces for the first time on record as a duo. Pianist and electronic music architect Jozef Dumoulin and drummer/percussionist Eric Thielemans share more than twenty-five years of musical history, but have never before come together to create a full-length duo recording.
What began as a casual two-day studio session in Antwerp evolved into a particularly intense musical document. Without a pre-determined plan, Dumoulin and Thielemans set out to explore what still drives them today: listening, investigating, experimenting and probing the boundaries of their musical practice. Their conversations about music, artistic freedom and the place of improvisation in an increasingly commercial landscape were just as much a part of the process as the ensemble playing itself.
The result is a fascinating musical world in which repetition, gradual transformation and subtle rhythmic shifts take centre stage. The compositions unfold slowly and invite a profound listening experience in which time seems to stretch out and sound is constantly changing form.
The title DAIMON refers to the twilight zone between light and shadow, to the space in which music eludes clear stylistic definitions. The album embraces ambiguity, nuance and the unknown, and showcases two musicians who, with great care and mutual trust, create a universe of their own.
