Mon Rovîa calls the mountains of Tennessee his home, but he’s had an intense journey before settling there. The musician was born in war-torn Liberia, where he managed to escape life as a child soldier thanks to the help of missionaries. In the years that followed, he lived in various places, trying to process his trauma. On top of that came the challenge of cultural assimilation that Mon experienced as a transracially adopted refugee.
Mon’s music is a sonic fusion of these experiences, blended with the empathy he feels for the people he encounters throughout his life. His exposure to different cultures can be heard in his music, where he seamlessly weaves American folk and African rhythms into a comforting musical tapestry.
