Brussels musician and producer presents new sound
UM! (Umi Defoort) is a Brussels-based producer and musician with Japanese roots. Drawing on classical, jazz and hip-hop, he creates a unique, genre-defying sound. His solo debut, UM!, was released in 2020, featuring contributions from Peet, Chibi Ichigo, Glints and Jazz Brak, amongst others.
Although we’ve seen Umi hard at work in recent years with artists such as Chibi Ichigo, on tours across Belgium, the Netherlands and Japan, and at numerous major festivals with bands he works closely with, things have been a bit quieter on the solo front.
Five years ago he released a hip-hop album; now, with his new record, he’s taking a different approach: “It’s going to be an electronic album on which I also sing myself. Completely different from my first album, which featured a lot of guest artists and didn’t feature me singing.”
At AB Club, he takes you on a nocturnal journey through his own electronic universe — accompanied live by saxophonist Jeroen Van Herzeele, whose jazz-infused layers add an extra dimension to the live experience.
