All Connected
All Connected is a series in Huis23 which involves concerts, films, readings and instrument presentations with and about artists who play with the language of ‘voltage control’, who use the ‘modular’ as creative thought process and test musical limits with it, artists who work in the spirit of San Francisco Tape Music Centre: a collective that came into being when pioneers like Terry Riley, Morton Subotnick, Steve Reich, Ramon Sender, Pauline Oliveros, and many others connected their oscillators and tape-recorders together and from which the most progressive music of that period originated.
Af Ursin
Af Ursin is the solo project of Finnish-born Belgian resident Timo van Luijk. As autodidact, he mainly works on improvised music that he creates with all sorts of acoustic instruments, found objects and 'the home-studio as instrument'. The intuitive and poetic aspect form the core of his ‘free-form compositions’. He has released a dozen LPs on his La Scie Dorée label, solo work as well as collaborative projects (including Elodie, In Camera, La Poupée Vivante). Aside from his music, in recent years he has also been active in the graphic arts, photography and video. In 1989, together with Geert Feytons, he established the musical improvisation and multi-media band Noise-Maker's Fifes. They released several CDs and DVDs and toured all through Europe. After Geert's death in 2006, van Luijk focussed more upon his solo work and formed the band Onde with Greg Jacobs and Marc Wroblewski (both also members of Noise-Maker's Fifes and Metaphon).
Timo has worked with the likes of Andrew Chalk, Christoph Heemann, Frederik Croene, Kris Vanderstraeten, Limpe Fuchs, Nurse With Wound, Onde, Raymond Dijkstra…. In 2007 he helped to establish Metaphon, a label and concert organisation that aims to promote sound-art and experimental & electronic music. They released a number of wonderfully packaged issues of Arsène Souffriau, Baudouin Oosterlynck, Michael Ranta - Mike Lewis - Conny Plank and the famous IPEM box set. The latest Metaphon release, which will be officially launched at this event, is an LP/CD issue by Joris de Laet.
Af Ursin presents an acoustic live set + new video work. The official release of a new Af Ursin album on La Scie Dorée is also expected during this event.
Baudouin Oosterlynck
Born in 1946, in Kortrijk, Oosterlynck started composing musical improvisations, as autodidact, in the early ’70s. His interest in the relation between the eye, the ear and the ‘Silence Air’ cause him to create sound performances and musical installations. Since the early ’90s he has also been working with ‘listening instruments’. Baudouin Oosterlynck has created more than 200 expos and performances worldwide. The most important of these were in the Museo Reina Sofia (Spain), the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz, Archipel (Genève) and at Ars Musica. On this All Connected evening: he comes to talk about his work, one of his musical compositions will be performed and there will be a screening of ‘Singulier Voyage entre l'oeil et l'oreille’ (32 min.) (a documentary on Oosterlynck that was made by ARTE and RTBF in 2001).
Joris de Laet
Joris de Laet was born in 1947 in Antwerp. Aside from following lessons for a number of years at music school (violin and cello), he didn't have any artistic training. De Laet worked autodidactically and was mainly interested in the avant-garde train of thought. He was especially intrigued by the possibilities of sound amplification, so much so that he even built or modified instruments himself. In 1973, de Laet established SEM (Studio for Experimental Music) to introduce the audience to avant-garde music. With SEM he organised monthly concerts at various locations (BRT2 studios, the Singel...), with performances by outstanding musicians of his day. The SEMensemble was established in 1974, with the aim of performing post-production studio techniques live (a constant in de Laet's oeuvre) so that real-time communication was also made possible by electronic means. Many different creative disciplines (theatre, poetry, light experiments...) were united in the shows created for this ensemble by composers like Karel Goeyvaerts and André Stordeur. For the shows with traditional instruments they called upon the skills of Luc Brewaeys and Serge Verstockt, amongst others. During his time at the IPEM (Institute for Psycho-acoustic and Electronic Music ) in Ghent from 1972 to 1975, de Laet came into contact with Karel Goeyvaerts, which resulted in a number of concerts (including Partiduur 12345) and works (Tot Barstens Toe, Maskerade) that both composers collaborated on. He also met Lucien Goethals and Herman Sabbe in the IPEM.
Joris de Laet taught composition of electro-acoustic music at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp until 2012. He is also the co-founder and vice-chairman of the Belgian Federation of Electro-acoustic music (BeFEM / FéBeMe). In 1997, de Laet received the SABAM prize for electro-acoustic music and in 2000 he became a member of the SABAM committee for the evaluation of electro-acoustic compositions. At All Connected, de Laet will present a work in quadrophonic sound, preceded by a short video introduction on the composer and his work. With a brand new issue by Joris de Laet in the Metaphon catalogue, it is the first time his adventurous oeuvre has received extensive attention.
screening ORAMICS: ATLANTIS ANEW by AURA SATZ, UK, 2011, 7min.
The movie is conceived of as an artist’s film in homage to Daphne Oram, the pioneer of British Electronic Music and co-founder of the BBC Radiophonic workshop in 1958. Oram used drawn sound principles to compose ’handwrought’ electronic music, and yet the visual nature of her work remains unseen.
