Laet + screening Oramics: Atlantis Anew
LOCATION:AB Salon - zittend (Steenstraat 11\, 1000 Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:All Connected All Connected is a series in Huis23 which\ninvolves concerts\, films\, readings and instrument\npresentations with and about artists who play with the\nlanguage of ‘voltage control’\, who use the\n‘modular’ as creative thought process and test musical\nlimits with it\, artists who work in the spirit of San\nFrancisco Tape Music Centre: a collective that came into\nbeing when pioneers like Terry Riley\, Morton Subotnick\,\nSteve Reich\, Ramon Sender\, Pauline Oliveros\, and many\nothers connected their oscillators and tape-recorders\ntogether and from which the most progressive music of that\nperiod originated. Af Ursin Af Ursin is the solo\nproject of Finnish-born Belgian resident Timo van Luijk. As\nautodidact\, he mainly works on improvised music that he\ncreates with all sorts of acoustic instruments\, found\nobjects and 'the home-studio as instrument'. The\nintuitive and poetic aspect form the core of his\n‘free-form compositions’. He has released a dozen LPs on\nhis La Scie Dorée label\, solo work as well as\ncollaborative projects (including Elodie\, In Camera\, La\nPoupée Vivante). Aside from his music\, in recent years he\nhas also been active in the graphic arts\, photography and\nvideo. In 1989\, together with Geert Feytons\, he\nestablished the musical improvisation and multi-media band\nNoise-Maker's Fifes. They released several CDs and DVDs\nand toured all through Europe. After Geert's death in\n2006\, van Luijk focussed more upon his solo work and formed\nthe band Onde with Greg Jacobs and Marc Wroblewski (both\nalso members of Noise-Maker's Fifes and Metaphon).Timo\nhas worked with the likes of Andrew Chalk\, Christoph\nHeemann\, Frederik Croene\, Kris Vanderstraeten\, Limpe\nFuchs\, Nurse With Wound\, Onde\, Raymond Dijkstra…. In\n2007 he helped to establish Metaphon\, a label and concert\norganisation that aims to promote sound-art and experimental\n& electronic music. They released a number of\nwonderfully packaged issues of Arsène Souffriau\, Baudouin\nOosterlynck\, Michael Ranta - Mike Lewis - Conny Plank and\nthe famous IPEM box set. The latest Metaphon release\, which\nwill be officially launched at this event\, is an LP/CD\nissue by Joris de Laet.Af Ursin presents an acoustic live\nset + new video work. The official release of a new Af Ursin\nalbum on La Scie Dorée is also expected during this event. \n Baudouin Oosterlynck Born in 1946\, in Kortrijk\,\nOosterlynck started composing musical improvisations\, as\nautodidact\, in the early ’70s. His interest in the\nrelation between the eye\, the ear and the ‘Silence Air’\ncause him to create sound performances and musical\ninstallations. Since the early ’90s he has also been\nworking with ‘listening instruments’. Baudouin\nOosterlynck has created more than 200 expos and performances\nworldwide. The most important of these were in the Museo\nReina Sofia (Spain)\, the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz\,\nArchipel (Genève) and at Ars Musica. On this All Connected\nevening: he comes to talk about his work\, one of his\nmusical compositions will be performed and there will be a\nscreening of ‘Singulier Voyage entre l'oeil et\nl'oreille’ (32 min.) (a documentary on Oosterlynck\nthat was made by ARTE and RTBF in 2001). Joris de\nLaet Joris de Laet was born in 1947 in Antwerp. Aside\nfrom following lessons for a number of years at music school\n(violin and cello)\, he didn't have any artistic\ntraining. De Laet worked autodidactically and was mainly\ninterested in the avant-garde train of thought. He was\nespecially intrigued by the possibilities of sound\namplification\, so much so that he even built or modified\ninstruments himself. In 1973\, de Laet established SEM\n(Studio for Experimental Music) to introduce the audience to\navant-garde music. With SEM he organised monthly concerts at\nvarious locations (BRT2 studios\, the Singel...)\, with\nperformances by outstanding musicians of his day. The\nSEMensemble was established in 1974\, with the aim of\nperforming post-production studio techniques live (a\nconstant in de Laet's oeuvre) so that real-time\ncommunication was also made possible by electronic means.\nMany different creative disciplines (theatre\, poetry\,\nlight experiments...) were united in the shows created for\nthis ensemble by composers like Karel Goeyvaerts and André\nStordeur. For the shows with traditional instruments they\ncalled upon the skills of Luc Brewaeys and Serge Verstockt\,\namongst others. During his time at the IPEM (Institute for\nPsycho-acoustic and Electronic Music ) in Ghent from 1972 to\n1975\, de Laet came into contact with Karel Goeyvaerts\,\nwhich resulted in a number of concerts (including Partiduur\n12345) and works (Tot Barstens Toe\, Maskerade) that both\ncomposers collaborated on. He also met Lucien Goethals and\nHerman Sabbe in the IPEM.Joris de Laet taught composition of\nelectro-acoustic music at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp\nuntil 2012. He is also the co-founder and vice-chairman of\nthe Belgian Federation of Electro-acoustic music (BeFEM /\nFéBeMe). In 1997\, de Laet received the SABAM prize for\nelectro-acoustic music and in 2000 he became a member of the\nSABAM committee for the evaluation of electro-acoustic\ncompositions. At All Connected\, de Laet will present a work\nin quadrophonic sound\, preceded by a short video\nintroduction on the composer and his work. With a brand new\nissue by Joris de Laet in the Metaphon catalogue\, it is the\nfirst time his adventurous oeuvre has received extensive\nattention.screening ORAMICS: ATLANTIS ANEW by AURA SATZ\,\nUK\, 2011\, 7min.The movie is conceived of as an artist’s\nfilm in homage to Daphne Oram\, the pioneer of British\nElectronic Music and co-founder of the BBC Radiophonic\nworkshop in 1958. Oram used drawn sound principles to\ncompose ’handwrought’ electronic music\, and yet the\nvisual nature of her work remains unseen. \nlinks:http://www.lasciedoree.be/http://www.metaphon.be/http://www.kwadratuur.be/interviews/detail/timo_van_luijk_af_ursin/#.UybzeYX4LdUhttp://www.baudouinoosterlynck.be/\n \nhttp://www.mixcloud.com/desartssonnants/baudouin-oosterlynck-city-sonic-2012/http://jorisdelaet.magix.net/website/#Nieuwe%20pagina%200http://www.iamanagram.com/\n
