Belgian première by a rapper who describes her style as “hip-hop infused with gospel, jazz, soul and prose”
The New Yorker Sorvina, currently based in Berlin, is dangerously disarming. Just one minute of listening to her Live From The Living Room session and you’ll be smitten. Describing her sound in one sentence: “Rooted entirely in the African-American experience, my sound is hip-hop infused with gospel, jazz, soul and prose.”
Live, Sorvina invariably performs with a backing band. In her words, “Performing is the greatest joy of my life.” In Germany, she shared the stage with impressive international talent such as Alabaster DePlume, Moor Mother and Lonnie Holley, further highlighting her potential.
Any shout-outs, Sorvina? “Yes! To Tyler, The Creator, Doechii, Little Simz and every other queer Black rapper! The future of hip-hop is intersectional, and I love to not only see it but attempt to be a part of it.”
“Brilliantly explosive jazz: from Robert Glasper-style hip-hop fusion to lightning-speed drum breaks and modal melody” (The Guardian)
Moses Yoofee Trio is approved by Lefto, Gilles Peterson and the Guardian, who wrote: “Brilliantly explosive jazz. Leading the pack is keyboardist Moses Yoofee and his groove-forward trio, who have garnered a European following thanks to their intricate and often explosive live shows, which draw on everything from Robert Glasper-style hip-hop fusion to lightning-speed drum breaks and modal melody.”
On their latest album, MYT, composer and pianist Moses Yoofee (DE) is joined by some serious talent: Noah Fürbringer, one of today’s hottest drummers, and the soulful bassist Roman Klobe.
Our colleagues at the Swiss concert venue Moods are fans too: “The sound is explosive, the playing unpredictable and the music a mix of jazz, hip-hop, soul and electro. As comfortable in the studio as they are on stage, with phenomenal performances of virtuosity and musicality, this power trio has attracted interest from the best festivals (like We Out Here) and titillated the ears of the best producers (Kaidi Tatham, Gilles Peterson, etc.). A musical slap in the face not to be missed.”
