Polish five-piece Omasta recently debuted in style: namely, with a delicious live set in honour of hip-hop legend J Dilla in their hometown Krakow. Their set also featured reworked versions by other hip-hop pioneers like Madlib and MF Doom. No coincidence: they played their set in record shop named Paul's Boutique, a one-to-one nod to the Beastie Boys' classic 1998 album.

Omasta deliberately combines jazz with influences from hip-hop and street culture. They do so with a driven rhythm section, complemented by piano, trumpet, saxophone and ... flute! No coincidence - we guess - that André 3000 or Shabaka Hutchings also recently indulged in the flute and came up with some pretty impressive work.

Meanwhile, Omasta is working hard to release their first release on the also Polish quality label Astigmatic Records (see also: EABS or BŁOTO to discover at BRDCST 2025). But first a focus on J Dilla and that in the context of ‘Dilla Month’. Not coincidentally February, the month in which he was both born (1974) and died (2006) at the age of barely 32 from cardiac arrest.

Spoiler alert: anyone who suddenly sees a second trumpet player appear on stage ... there is a good chance that he looks like Aquiles Navarro (Irreversible Entanglements) ... Navarro has been residing in the capital for a while ... and not playing when the trumpet is available is not an option ...
