The new batch of South African jazz. The Guardian: *****
The South African jazz scene has had quite a few iconic names such as Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) or Hugh Masekela, among others. In the year 2022, however, it is time to welcome new talent on the stage with inspiring artists such as SPAZA, Sibusile Xaba, dumama + kechou and Malcolm Jiyane, who are all clustered around the African label Mushroom Hour Half Hour. Trombonist/pianist Malcolm Jiyane impresses on his debut 'Umaldi', meaning 'the creator', as - dixit All About Jazz - 'a highly personal voice and an irresistible style'. The Guardian immediately lauded the album with a five star review and catapulted it to global album of the month.
