Veelbelovend. His future looks bright.
A Liveurope concert:
The first pan-European initiative supporting concert venues in their efforts to promote emerging European music.
This 21-year-old Londoner was recently hailed by all the hip-hop connoisseurs – including American music-mag/hype-predictor The Fader – as “Britain’s most recent new hope in hip hop“. Not bad for a young guy who goes by the name of Loyle Carner, who only debuted at the end of ‘14 with EP ‘A Little Late’ (tip: free download available via his website!) and also has to contend with a heap of up-and-coming rap-talent in homeland UK, eg: Rejjie Snow (from Ireland, to be correct), Little Simz, J Hus, Stormzy, Section Boyz, Novelist and George The Poet. Indeed, with the latter five, he shares the coveted ‘BBC Sound Of ’ seal that has catapulted young artists in the direction of world-fame for years now.
He has worked with spoken-word icon Kate Tempest and Kwes, was allowed to warm up for MF Doom, Joey Bada$$ and that very same Tempest, and could air his feelings on the stage of the Glastonbury Festival. Contrary to most of his rapping British colleagues, Carner takes an other, laidback, more old-school hip-hop approach. Minimalistic, jazzy beats layered only with his melancholy baritone, telling stories that really do stick to your soul. Top class.
By the way, his upcoming UK tour is full-to-bursting and includes a stop at London’s Village Underground that, just like AB, is a part of the Liveurope gang.
Very well-known south of the language border but a raw diamond for those to the north of it: Le Dé! This true born talent from Liège recently released one of the better French-language hip-hop albums out there, in the form of new EP ‘Delta Plane’, 7 top tracks that grove between sober trap, a jazzy vibe and, above all, excellent beats and a killer flow. Must see!
Bold beats, easy flow and a superb voice, in other words: hip-hopper Grey. This ambitious guy from Antwerp first floated to the surface on successful single ‘Night Slugs ft. Grey’ by his cousin Woodie Smalls and as of late he’s been scoring with his own EP ‘Do The Right Thing’. On it, Grey turns out sturdy boom bap beats and tight English lyrics, bundled into six great songs. Keep an eye on that guy!
