The Shins, Gnarles Barkley and a dash of pop in the blender!
Broken Bells is dynamic duo Brian ‘Danger Mouse’ Burton & James ‘The Shins’ Mercer. On ‘After The Disco’, their second release, the guys continue in the same vein as on their self-titled debut from ’10 and EP ‘Meyrin Fields’ from ‘11. Eccentric indie-pop, charmingly coloured by mysterious top-producer Danger Mouse (who already earned his stripes with The Black Keys, Beck, Gorillaz, Norah Jones and as half of Gnarles Barkley) and topped off with a tasteful psychedelica sauce.
Funky top-single ‘Holding On For life’ bathes in a spacey vibe. Mercer's penetrating vocals play a vital role and are accompanied by a two-part intergalactic love-story in which the ravishing Kate Mara (Brokeback Mountain) and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Alpha Dog) steal the show. The short films were put together by The Creators Project, a Vice and Intel joint-venture that provides a platform for interesting artistic projects (from the likes of Arcade Fire, Four Tet, Qotsa and Daft Punk).
Broken Bells descended upon Pukkelpop in 2010 and, since then, we've mainly seen Mercer turn up on stage here with his The Shins. Now returning at the end of March, with partner in crime Danger Mouse and a portion of sublime left ola!field pop!
Aside from gardening, California's Gardens & Villa has a great passion for slightly crazy, light electronic indie-pop. Their second album ‘Dunes’ is now a fact and they'd like to present it in Brussels as pacesetter for Broken Bells.
