Legendary cult band is back in full force
Au Pairs is a post-punk band that was originally formed in 1978 and quickly became a true cult band. The legendary journalist Lester Bangs once said: ‘Last night I saw God in the form of the Au Pairs’.
After a long hiatus, the band has reformed with a new line-up, including the original frontwoman Lesley Woods, once described as ‘one of the most striking women in British rock’. Together with Estella Adeyeri (Big Joanie) on bass, Alex Ward (known for his work with Thurston Moore and Pere Ubu) on guitar and Jem Doulton (also associated with Thurston Moore) on drums, Woods breathes new life into the band’s repertoire and highlights its enduring relevance in a contemporary context.
Au Pairs are known for combining politically engaged and feminist themes with a danceable sound driven by a tight rhythm section and cutting, duelling guitars heavily influenced by funk.
Their live performances are direct and compelling: rhythm-driven, tightly executed and focused on forging a strong connection with the audience. The result is a set that feels both urgent and intense, leaving the audience energised and fully engaged.
