Piano talent from London blurs the boundaries between jazz, grime and hip-hop
Award-winning London jazz pianist, singer, composer and producer Ashley Henry can already present a remarkable résumé at a relatively young age. He toured worldwide as pianist for Christine and the Queens and also performed as opener for Loyle Carner. His album ‘Beautiful Vinyl Hunter’ (2019) was even nominated in the category ‘Album of the Year’ by BBC 6 Music. Detail: at the time, it was only the second jazz album ever to have earned such a nomination.
Ashley Henry says his music has been influenced both by writers James Baldwin and Angela Davis as well as by musicians like Ahmad Jamal, George Benson, Geri Allen and Aretha Franklin. Clash Music once uttered these wonderful words: “The sheer breadth of Ashley Henry’s vision is jaw-dropping.”
In the autumn of 2024, his latest album ‘Who We Are’ will be released on his brand new own label Royal Raw Music, which aims to be ‘continually pursuing and pushing the boundaries of artistic expression and collaboration.’
