The power of longform drone based music
This event is part of the BRDCST concert series, connecting idiosyncratic artists with inquisitive listeners. Discover music that grates, surprises and stays with you.
There’s something truly special about drone-based music. Whether it’s the vocals of Pandit Pran Nath, the ARP 2500 of Éliane Radigue, or the nearly blown-out amplifiers of Sunn O))), by shifting the listener’s focus from details toward the flow, drones have a unique ability to transport our minds far, far away.
The music of Water Damage, the loud droning collective from Austin, is a damn fine example of how that process works. With the motto “Maximal Repetition Minimal Deviation,” Water Damage creates glowing waves of drones that completely carry you along.
The members are all veterans of various projects: Spray Paint, Black Eyes, USA/Mexico, more eaze, Thor & Friends, Marriage, Swans, SUR, Astral Spirits Records… Their approach to form is less frontal than that of many of their contemporaries, and the surface of their sound is sometimes disrupted by auditory events that are not exactly drone-like. But the main body is usually a blend of harmonic tones and textures pointing toward a goal just out of earshot, just beyond the next hill, and perhaps forever out of reach.
Christina Carter (°1968, Houston) is a co-founder of Charalambides and has developed a distinct and deeply personal sound using voice, guitar, harmonica, and piano. Her work combines improvisation with an exploration of song and the importance of lyrics. She has performed extensively in the US, UK, and Europe and has collaborated with, among others, Jeffrey Alexander and Loren Connors.
In addition to music, she is active as a poet and visual artist, with publications and exhibitions. In 2024, her book For Want Of Walls was released. Her recent album is Like A Bayou To Its Gulf (2025).
Jeffrey Alexander (°1968, Baltimore) is a prolific psychedelic musician with countless releases and collaborations. He has played in Jackie-O Motherfucker, Dire Wolves, and Black Forest/Black Sea, among others. His work has been released on labels such as Feeding Tube, Warp, and Astral Editions. He has also been active as a curator, DJ, label head, and festival organizer (including Terrastock). He has a varied background, ranging from truck driver to museum technician. Musically, he focuses on free improvisation and collaborations. His current project Heavy Lidders features contributions from Marissa Nadler and members of Animal Collective.
His latest record includes vocals by Christina Carter, who will also join the tour.
His solo work is minimalist and subdued, yet remains rooted in psychedelic exploration.
