As musicians and vocalists, Nel and Rahmat are of course also part of the seven-piece ensemble THE SWOON, Stef Kamil Carlens' vibrant backing band with whom he released the much-acclaimed 2024 album Be(e) Who You Wanna Be(e) – a project that wowed both press and audiences with its energetic, funky, and colorful live shows.
Stef Kamil Carlens intends to keep this spirit alive for a while, and together with his band, continues to work between projects on new songs once again rooted in powerful grooves.
That said, Stef Kamil Carlens has certainly not lost his love for the narrative art of the luisterlied (storytelling song). For THE POEM tour and album, he presents new work and, together with the ladies, reinterprets songs from his own extensive repertoire as well as gems drawn from the boundless treasure trove of singer-songwriter traditions – where the lines between poetry, literature, and (pop) music blur beautifully.
The spoken word, elevated by music, is carried by their three unique and contrasting voices. Stef Kamil Carlens' husky tenor has long been a recognizable sound in the Belgian music scene, flanked by Nel Ponsaers’ soft, velvety alto and Rahmat Emonds’ soulful soprano. Incidentally, the band’s name combines the first two letters of the singers’ surnames. Harmony singing takes center stage in this concert, yet all three artists also step forward as soloists, giving each song a distinct perspective and emotional world.
In every musical adventure SKC embarks upon, his deep love of instruments shines through. This time, too, he travels with an impressive collection of special guitars, basses, small organs, analog synths, and a striking automated snare drum – creating moments where it feels as though the trio is joined by an invisible musician.
The music of Stef Kamil Carlens & THE POEM is pure and minimalist—stripped to its essence, yet rich in emotion and imagination.
