Robin Verheyen Trio w/ Drew Gress & Billy Hart present 'Liftoff'
Saxophonist Robin Verheyen (¼ TaxiWars) surrounds himself with Drew Gress (John Zorn) and Billy Hart (Miles Davis)
Belgian saxophonist Robin Verheyen is no stranger to AB. As the architect behind Tom Barman’s TaxiWars, he presented every (classy) album here: from Taxiwars to Fever to Artificial Horizon. He appeared at AB in 2010 and 2016 too, with his New York quartet.
Enter Robin Verheyen Trio, featuring two heavyweights of the New York jazz scene: Drew Gress and the legendary Billy Hart. Bassist Drew Gress is best known for his work with John Zorn and Fred Hersch. Billy Hart, for his part, is a true legend. He can be heard drumming on classics like On The Corner (1972) by Miles Davis and Karma (1969) by Pharoah Sanders.
The new trio album Liftoff was recorded with saxophonist Wayne Shorter in mind. Advance single Soul Searching – according to Verheyen “a song about finding love and meeting your soulmate” – is already pure splendour. The release of Liftoff goes hand in hand with Verheyen’s return to Europe from New York, where he has been living and working since 2007.
Welcome back, Robin!
