An in depth listening session of Soukous music through the Afro-Rythmes label
TalkDare Balogun is a British-Nigerian DJ, writer, broadcaster and archivist based in London. His practice is committed to traditional African music: vinyl only, research-led, built for the dancefloor, and held together by one connected idea, that the dance forms of West and Central Africa (Highlife, Juju, Soukous, Makossa and Palm wine) are the foundation of modern Black dance music. Most of the practice runs through Roots to Rhythm, the project and living archive he co-founded with Grace Shelley: a monthly residency on NTS Radio and a series of listening sessions and parties. The work has moved between cultural institutions, listening bars, club nights and museums, from the Barbican and Southbank Centre in London to Public Records in New York, PAMM in Miami, Radio Radio in Amsterdam and SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin.
