THE SOUNDS OF SCIENCE soundtrack by Yo La Tengo
8 documentaries by Jean Painlevé, 1927 - 1972 , 78 min, VO (French) English subtitles
In 2001, at the request of the San Francisco International Film Festival, Yo La Tengo wrote the score for 8 short nature documentaries by Frenchman Jean Painlevé.
These underwater documentaries were made between 1927 and 1972 and give a good idea of the extensive work of director, cameraman, actor, translator, critic and theorist Painlevé. He is considered to be one of the founders of ‘scientific’ cinema and was a much admired figure in Paris' Surrealism circles in the ’20's of last century.
The soundtrack's instrumentals were recorded on 23 April 2005 during the Webster Film Series in St Louis, Missouri. You can expect an eclectic mix of ambient, post-rock and free-jazz and it sounds like nothing else the band has ever made. The album that was later released was only available via the Yo La Tengo website or at concerts. So that's something for the true fans!
These 8 films by the ‘underground Jean Cousteau’ and the associated music by one of the most exciting bands of the last 3 decades are presented to you in the cosy surroundings of Huis23. Seats are limited so be sure to register in time for this exclusive screening.
