“Positively spellbinding and downright possessed.” (NME)
“Haunting doom-laden soul.” (Vogue)
“Strange, compelling, old-fashioned and timeless.” (The Observer)
After witch house , You thought you'd gotten the hang of the latest music genre? That's good. But still. As of now you can sate yourself on Cold Specks' hypnotic doom soul . We've rarely been so impressed by a voice as we were by that of Canadian black Al Spx, or: Cold Specks. Her musical roots go back to the tradition of the Deep South (think: Alan Lomax' field recordings ) spiked with the aura of Bill Callahan and Tom Waits and the spirituality of Mahalia Jackson. Her band name is derived from James Joyce's ‘Ulysses’ (more specifically the sentence “Born all in the dark wormy earth, cold specks of fire, evil, lights shining in the darkness.” Her debut ‘I Predict A Graceful Expulsion’ is soon to be released, with the assistance of Rob Ellis (cf. Pj Harvey). She has now exchanged Canada's Etobicoke for London, in order to conquer the world from there. ‘Later With Jools’ has already fallen for her talent. May we urge you to do the same?
