With Punk 50, AB celebrates fifty years of chaos, freedom and unadulterated expression. We honour the rich history, the vibrant present and the future of punk.
The British punk band Crass (1977–1984) is regarded as one of the most influential and politically radical bands in music history. According to The Guardian, they were “musically, artistically and politically the most extreme band to emerge from the initial wave of punk”.
Crass didn’t just shout that they were DIY (Do It Yourself) – they acted on it. They had their own community (Dial House in Essex, UK), ran their own record label (Crass Records) and designed their own, now iconic, record sleeves. With their song ‘Punk Is Dead’, they took a dig at the Sex Pistols and The Clash, who quickly sold their souls to major record labels.
Especially for AB, Crass frontman Steve Ignorant will be performing their now-classic debut album 'The Feeding of the 5000' on Saturday 16 May. The album – featuring many Crass classics such as Do They Owe Us A Living?, Banned From The Roxy and Punk Is Dead – was controversial even before it hit the shelves.
