AB Lab is a playground for all music lovers and makers. We have so many people with different creative backgrounds that come by our spaces.
I’m Olly, the content creator for AB Lab and these are the 3 things that mostly inspired me this month, I hope they spark something in you too!
gala dragot’s teddy bear
I think by now everybody knows how obsessed I am with gala dragot. Not only ith her music, but really her overall demeanor.
During her residency, she mentioned a few times how, along the way of growing up, we often lose that childlike wonder and that’s the thing that she actively tries to protect.
When we first met, she was carrying her teddy bear that always joins her in her endeavors. A teddy bear is such a relatable and recognizable symbol of softness, nostalgia and whimsy.
My teddy is a tiger, a bit like Hobbes from Calvin and Hobbes. It’s such an intrinsic part of my creative references that I even have a tattoo of it.
It was a good reminder to not take everything to seriously and that the most heartfelt art comes from your lived experience.
P.S. She’s coming back to AB in October!
Kampire’s sense of community
Blck mamba invited dj Kampire for a talk about how and where to find new music to make a dj set even more personal and interesting.
She didn’t only focus on the websites and tools that she uses, but the conversation extended to the understanding of what a dj does and who they do it for.
Djs are curators of music, but in the last period there has been a more and more individualistic trend, where the person behind the deck becomes the main focus and takes away from the main point: dancing and enjoying the music.
Kampire urged the audience to talk to each other online or irl, to go back to the roots of what djing is. She encouraged people to share your finds with the community and think outside of a gatekeeping system.
It made me so excited to go back behind the deck and make people dance.
La Marea’s independent and emerging sound
One of our main activities at the Lab is to bring new artists in contact with experienced musicians and singers. Every session is guided by a new coach and we and we had the opportunity to work with producer Paulo Rietjens.
The atmosphere was very cozy and familiar, the cherry on top for me was to be brought into La Marea’s world. He was the first artist that played his demo. His music tells a story, it’s the type of sound that would play during an emotionally charged, slow motion movie scene. It made me think about how producer are coming more to the forefront as full artists and honestly inspired me to dip my toes into some music production software.
