Selectress & black metal enthusiast
Soundtrack by… the turntable champions who set the scene for the night. Sometimes with a minimalist, ambient noise or deep drones in the background, sometimes with a maximalist, pulsing rhythm. But always with a true DJ heart, in the right place.
Serving up tunes on Tuesday night is Monstera Occulta (BE). She describes herself as a selectress, SWANA-music lover (Google it!), black metal enthusiast (so are we!) and vinyl junkie (yep… so are we!).
Last year, she scored a veritable hat trick at AB with her excellent sets at Feeërieën (on the same nights as Lord Spikeheart and Mohammad Syfkhan) and at the AB Club during A Turkish Psychedelica Night after Altın Gün. Check out her mixtapes on SoundCloud and become an instant fan like us. The (dark) soundtrack for the night is in good hands.
A unique collaboration between Colin H. van Eeckhout and Broeder Dieleman
De Mannen Broeders is the unique collaboration between Amenra chief Colin H. van Eeckhout (BE) and the contemporary troubadour Tonnie Dieleman, better known as Broeder Dieleman (NL).
Dutchman Broeder Dieleman has created eccentric (biblical) folk music in the Zeelandic Flemish dialect for many years. On the surface, he might seem a strange match for Colin. But you’d be surprised: in Colin’s project CHVE, for example, the hurdy-gurdy takes centre stage, and Amenra has released multiple low-key renditions of Het Dorp and De Zotte Morgen by Belgian cabaret singer Zjef Vanuytsel.
Under the moniker De Mannen Broeders, the two musicians share their fascination with the darker side of life: sorrow, grief and ritual. Oor Magazine described their debut album Sober Maal: “At times, it sounds like a Roadburnian Elly en Rikkert. Yet the melodramatic diction is reminiscent of chansonnier Léo Ferré’s later work, and the gloomy feel of contemporary artists such as Lankum and Wovenhand is ever-present.”
In case you’re still not convinced: “Sober Maal is a sanctified masterpiece that never quite lets you move on, gradually and inescapably worming its way into your mind and soul,” wrote Humo. So don’t even think about missing it.
Belgian première of an experimental Irish doom/drone folk collective (with members of Lankum)
While ØXN’s (IR) debut album Cyrm dates from 2023, Feeërieën 2025 will be this intriguing Irish doom/drone folk collective’s Belgian premiere. Together with Lankum’s False Lankum, Cyrm was one of 2023’s best alternative folk albums; an honour that the two groups gladly share and doubly deserve, as ØXN count two Lankum members among their number: singer and multi-instrumentalist Radie Peat and John ‘Spud’ Murphy (producer for Black Midi, among others).
Cyrm (pronounced ‘cy-rum’) met with international praise. The Guardian called it “Irish folk full of unsettling dark magic. Think: grisly trad tales, striking vocals and shades of PJ Harvey. Compelling!” while The Irish Times described it as “A modern masterpiece from an Irish neofolk supergroup.” They then proceeded to elevate the album ever higher, writing “Cyrm is an even more sonically adventurous record than False Lankum. They might not have entirely invented a genre, but they’ve refined and perfected an idiosyncratic take on 21st-century neofolk that sounds like nothing else on earth.”
The group’s name, ØXN (pronounced ‘oxen’) refers to exactly what you’d expect: castrated draft animals. Their debut album contains two remarkably radical reinterpretations that just might win you over instantly: Love Henry (a remake of the murder ballad Henry Lee, which has previously been taken on by Bob Dylan and Nick Cave & PJ Harvey) and Farmer in the City (by Scott Walker).
Still not convinced? Or maybe you just need a tangible point of reference? We’ve got you covered: This spring, ØXN was one of the most memorable acts at the internationally renowned Roadburn Festival, where they performed ‘only’ their seventh live show ever. The Quietus described them as a mix between Richard Dawson and Sunn 0))).
Cross our hearts: this will be a highlight of Feeërieën 2025. Enrapturement guaranteed or your money back.
