Uncle Tom's club! Every so many years this pedigree storyteller returns again, for yet another portion of substantial stories and supple songs. Tom Russell is a veteran of so-called Americana, maybe even the inventor of the genre. His latest (25th?) CD is also called 'Anthology - Veteran's Day' and is of course a fat double one, bursting with impressive statements like 'Who's Gonna Build Your Wall?'
Tom Russell continues to inspiringly sing about hurt people and crooked situations, and makes heart-breaking songs about them. For all the new clients, we continue to repeat The Bulletin: 'his prowess as a songsmith has been recognized by the likes of Johnny Cash, kd Lang and Nanci Griffith... raw country styles that conjure up images of vast landscapes or feelings of doomed romance... it's as clichéd as check shirts at a line-dancing contest but marvelous all the same.'
