Fureur Afrobeat
Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Fela, with his dad's legendary Afrobeat band: Egypt 80. His full name is of course Seun Ransome Anikulapo Kuti and, more so than other members of this exceptional family, Seun sounds like the worthy successor to the controversial Nigerian frontman.
Fela Kuti was an intriguing politician, musician and clan leader. Lengthy, but mostly extremely hypnotizing, Afrobeat masterpieces and knock-out hits were his trademark. Think: 'International TT', 'Sorrow Tears And Blood'...
Son Seun can hold his own: with a solid bared chest, of course, he proclaimed frank slogans like 'Don't Give That Shit To Me' on his broiling debut CD 'Many Things' (here via Bang!)
All of that is associated with his first visit to AB in October 2008. With this reaction on our site at the time: 'Yep, the afrobeat brother par excellence (what do we have to offer in return? eurotrash?) Even just the intro by papa's band was a gem. A casual passer-by complained afterwards: it was too short and the songs were too long. Yeah, what more can be said to that.'
With yet another stirring visit to Couleur Café this summer and a fresh, sharply honed CD ready on Because (here via Bang! and Pias) and apparently produced by Brian Eno: From Africa With Fury: Rise!
