Singer-songwriter masterclass by a star-satirist!
“‘Oh It's Lonely At The Top!’ That was one of his most subtle hits. Alongside the following, of course: ‘Short People’, ‘Mama Told Me Not To Come’, ‘You Can Leave Your Hat On’, ‘Rider In The Rain’, ‘Naked Man’, ‘Simon Smith And The Amazing Dancing Bear’, ‘Rednecks’, ‘Birmingham’, ‘Sail Away’... But there are also the innumerable soundtracks, including for the likes of Ragtime and – pay attention children - Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Monsters... All strong feats by this American star-satirist, singer and pianist.
This is a musical must for those keen on playful English, dry humour and effervescent piano playing. Randy Newman can quite happily limit himself to his very own extensive oeuvre and he knows how to entertain like one of the best. That he's offspring of an entire family of Hollywood musicians might have something to do with that. Still not convinced? Then you should know that he has also been successfully covered by Alan Price, Three Dog Night and of course Joe Cocker! Hats off!”
That preface was actually the announcement for his most recent AB Concert, back in 2010. After which we read in De Morgen: “Sarcasm and irony raised to an art form. The setlist Randy Newman put together was impressive… The American songwriter, now 66, hasn't blunted a bit in his forty year career and - judging by the speed with which the tickets for the Sunday evening concert in the Ancienne Belgique were sold out – the grumpy guy is still pretty popular... A man you love to hate, as he's sure to appear before a sold out venue again next time.”
