Moog, a documentary by Hans Fjellestad, 70 min, 2005
‘I can feel what’s going on inside a piece of electronic equipment’ , it is with these words that Bob Moog begins this documentary about the visionary inventor and his famous Moog Synthesizers.
After starting to produce Theremins in the ’50's of last century (that instrument you play by moving your hands nearer or further from 2 antennas), in the early ’60's Bob Moog started developing oscillators, envelope generators and eventually, in 1966, the unique Moog Low Pass Filter.
Moog always remained in direct contact with the users of his (modular) synths and soon understood that there was a need for a compact synth in which you could connect various modules in a logical manner. The result was the Minimoog, the legendary synthesizer with 3 oscillators and the famous filter.
In this film we follow Bob Moog both at home and visiting many old friends (users of his synths), and in the Moog factories. He gives us a peek into the creative mental process and how his ground-breaking creations came into being.
Moreover, there are many well-known and less well-known Moog synth users who have their say (Keith Emerson, Luke Vibert, Money Mark, Gershon Kingsley,…) and it becomes apparent what an influence the man's design has had on entire generations of musicians.
This film is an exciting story with and about the creative mind who gave us one of the most inspiring electronic instruments ever.
Hot Chip, who will play later this evening in a sold out AB, use various Moog synthesizers, both live and when recording.
