TOUT VA BIEN (be)
A performing name forced itself upon him when Jan Wouter Van Gestel hastily took part in De Nieuwe Lichting in 2013. He rather sarcastically chose Tout Va Bien, but in retrospect the words turned out to be rather prophetic. Thanks to the likes of a brilliant interpretation of the Jacques Brel classic ‘Ne Me Quitte Pas’, the man from Mechelen was one of the winners of the first edition of StuBru's talent competition in 2013 (together with Rhino’s Are People Too and Soldier’s Heart).
All was still going well, back then, but it actually got much better! The single ‘This Fight’ is an earworm that camped in the national charts for weeks and his first longplayer is now a reality: ‘Kepler Star’ (out since April ’15 via Warner Music), produced by Arne ‘Styrofoam’ Van Petegem. An album full of moody songs in which the singer-songwriter flirts with Radiohead, James Blake and – closer to home – Oscar & The Wolf. By the way, the Kepler Star is a supernova, as in: the "super"variant of a nova or new star. Wonderfully tongue-in-cheek of Van Gestel, one of the new stars in the Belgian musical heavens!
Rebeka (aka Polish duo Iwona and Bartek) is as fascinated by both pop melodies and the writing of a real song (with a start and a finish) as by exciting and unconventional sounds. They combine electronica with alternative pop and thereby make use of an arsenal of diverse vintage equipment and other production frivolousness, such as analogue ‘80s synths and all sorts of drum computers.
Their adventurous approach has already attracted a heap of recognition on the home front. Debut album ‘Hellada’ (2013) was chosen by Poland's Gazeta Wyborzca as album of the year and, in November 2014, the duo managed to perform at the very first Polish version of Boiler Room (an electronic music project from London that is based on live-sets & video-streaming, that operates worldwide and that has already managed to get hold of James Blake, Thom Yorke and The Gaslamp Killer (and, in our own land, the likes of STUFF., Lefto, Moodprint and LTGL in Brussels' Bonnefooi).
Rebeka is gradually opening doors on foreign soil too, with visits to festivals like Eurosonic Noorderslag, The Great Escape and Primavera Sound ‘15. Music blog Noisey had the following to say about their about their concert at that last festival mentioned: ”The set by Polish duo Rebeka was the most fascinating synthpop performance I’ve seen in I don’t know how long.” Pigeons & Planes, another important player in the musical blogosphere, then described Rebeka’s sound as “both incredibly mystical and insanely danceable.” Talk about a successful European electro-pop combo!
