Carte blanche for Brussels improv/jazz label Rat Records
There are a limited number of combi-tickets available for the concerts taking place as a part of The New Wave Of Belgian Jazz! from WEDNESDAY 13 to TUESDAY 19 DECEMBER.
AB is proud to present THE NEW WAVE OF BELGIAN JAZZ!: a fantastic seven-dayer to conclude the successful JAZZ 100 series. We focus on the latest generation of musicians from The Contemporary National Jazz Scene, for whom jazz is more of a mentality than a genre.
Brussels label Rat Records – an abbreviation for Rare And Treacherous – is the label of founder Teun Verbruggen (Flat Earth Society, ex-Jef Neve Trio). His mission: more visibility for free jazz and the improve scène – the same goals Teun also aims for in his workplace ‘Walter’ in Anderlecht. Rat Records consistently issues exciting releases – about 30 to date – with an assortment of impressive (inter)national musicians from the likes of Mauro Pawlowski or Lynn Cassiers to Norwegian connections Stian Westerhus and Arve Henriksen.
8:00 pm – 8:30 pm:
Frederik Leroux will present recent work for the electric 6- and 12-string guitar. Monolithic riffs, gloomy soundscapes and directionless noodling are all subject to sonic exploration.
Frederik Leroux is a guitarist and banjo player mainly active in improvised music, be it (free)jazz, experimental or somewhat deranged folk. Frequent collaborators include Kris Vanderstraeten, Heleen Van Haegenborgh, Frans Van Isacker and Robert Landfermann.
Belgian label Aspen Edities just released a split LP of Leroux and fellow banjo player Ruben Machtelinckx, entitled ‘When the Shade is Stretched’ http://aspenedities.com/news
Line-Up: Frederik Leroux (electric 6- and 12-string guitar)
8:45 pm– 09:30 pm:
CHASING PENGUINS (VERBRUGGEN/FERNANDES QUINTET)
Absolutely no idea why the penguin is hip in jazz circles – check out: GoGo Penguin, the label Evil Penguin, ... – but brand new quintet Chasing Penguins certainly enriches that collection. In his never ending search for new collaborations, this time Verbruggen is working with Portuguese guitarist Andre Fernandes who was a member of the Lee Konitz Nonet for a while and in the band of singer Maria João. The Verbruggen/Fernandes Quintet can – with the addition of saxophonist Steven Dellanoye, pianist Nicola Andrioli and with bassist Nathan Wouters – certainly count on a dreamed of line-up.
Line-up: André Fernandes (guitar), Nicola Andrioli (piano) , Steven Dellanoye (sax) , Nathan Wouters (bass) , Teun Verbruggen (drums)
9:45 pm– 10:45 pm
DUO À L’ENCRE: TEUN VERBRUGGEN & BONOM (VINCENT GLOWINSKI) MEETS JOZEF DUMOULIN & LYNN CASSIERS
Brussels graffiti artist Bonom is definitely this evening’s most surprising guest. It is hard to imagine the streets of Brussels without his black+white drawings of spiders and skeletons, and since he took off his mask at the end of ’11 he has moved his activities from the street to the stage. Duo à l’Encre is a cross-pollination of image and music that approaches each other via improvisation. For this performance the duo expands into quartet with trusted friends from Teun’s entourage, Jozef Dumoulin and Lynn Cassiers.
Line-up: Teun Verbruggen (drums), Vincent 'Bonom' Glowinski (drawings), Jozef Dumoulin (keys), Lynn Cassiers (vocals)
