The nightclub is one of the most important spaces in contemporary culture. They're distinct spaces of nocturnal leisure providing visitors, musicians, artists, architects and designers with opportunities, inspiration and above all - freedom.
Music clubs & free spaces impact the cultural identity of our cities, they build subcultures & create communities. Rapid urban development and the focus on economic growth makes the history of free spaces increasingly urgent. Today, more than ever, it seems we have to remind ourselves of what free spaces mean and how we have to maintain them.
How have past movements contributed to the core identity of cities around the world? What can we learn from self-organized rave and festival culture? How can these insights influence our urban planning and create a foundation for new partnerships in the cultural landscape? And how can big institutions like AB be part of this conversation, what role could they play?
