All Connected is a series in Huis23 which involves concerts, films, readings and instrument presentations with and about artists who play with the language of ‘voltage control’, who use the ‘modular’ as creative thought process and test musical limits with it, artists who work in the spirit of San Francisco Tape Music Centre: a collective that came into being when pioneers like Terry Riley, Morton Subotnick, Steve Reich, Ramon Sender, Pauline Oliveros, and many others connected their oscillators and tape-recorders together and from which the most progressive music of that period originated. The series is curated by artist/composer Floris Vanhoof (http://endlesswebsite.blogspot.be/)
This German piano- and synthesizer-player is a well known figure in the world of free improvisation and contemporary music. Since the early ’90s, he's mainly been focussing on live-electronic music and he has developed himself as an expert on the EMS Synthi AKS. Thomas also works regularly with other artists like Marcus Schmikler, Gerry Hemingway, Paul Lovens, John Butcher,… During All Connected he will give a live performance with his famous synthesizer.
Pat Kraus is a real phenomenon. Weekly magazine The New Zealand Listener labelled him as "a national treasure" and "one of the most quietly important and interesting people making music in New Zealand". He says he makes music for freaks, outsiders, losers and weirdos and he does so in such a way that comparisons with the likes of Moondog, Sun Ra or Joe Meek are never far removed.
Aside from drums, guitar, organ and bamboo flute, he has also creates his music with tape loops and even a homemade synth. Based upon the designs of Serge Tcherepni, Kraus has been working on building his very own Serge synth modular system for a few years now (the one on which he will be performing during Connected).
Aside from this live set, Kraus will also give a reading on this instrument.
Guy Drieghe is a composer and analogue synth expert from Antwerp. He has been making music for film and theatre (including for Jan Fabre’s ‘Het is Theater Zoals te Verwachten en te Voorzien Was’) since the early ’80s and he is also the man who programmed the beats and synths on Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye in ’82.
After following workshops by the likes of Morton Subotnick and John Cage, he specialised himself in analogue modular synths and built his own Serge synth between 2009 and 2011, one with approximately 150 modules.
In early 2015 there will be a new, self-released album (‘Bismuth‘) coming out and in the meantime he is already working on a new album that is to be released later this year too.
Drieghe also possesses a few Buchla Music Easels, on which he will also play his live set during All Connected.
