Free, diverse, streetwise world music!
AB turns 40 in September and we’re celebrating in style while the entire booking team takes a temporary break. Come again? Well, throughout the party season, AB is handing the keys to the programming office over to a range of national and international curators with long-term associations with the venue.
To open our fortieth season, we are planning a festive weekend with different Belgian labels at the helm: On Saturday, DEEWEE and Stroom will do the honours in the Main Hall and AB Club respectively. In keeping with tradition, Sunday will host Global Street Sounds, where the Brussels label Rebel Up! will present several artists this year.
GLOBAL STREET SOUNDS is indeed both global and streetwise, and takes place from early afternoon in and around AB. Unfortunately, ongoing works prevent it from taking place on Steenstraat this year, but it is once again both free and diverse, with such names announced so far as La Yegros, Daniel Dzidzonu, SUSOBRINO and more. See below for more on these hot and exciting acts!
We recommend you check the AB site on the day for the finalised programme and schedule. And make sure you get on your bike, because Sunday 22nd September is, of course, a Car-Free Sunday!
A thrilling blend of folktronica and 'nu cumbia'. The Argentinean Mariana, aka Là Yegros, offers delightful, highly danceable sounds built upon cumbia, chamamé and other folk influences with an injection of electronica. Hence the term ‘folktronica’. She has recently completed work on her new CD, 'Suelta' (salvation). And you’re sure to know her from her summer hit 'Viene De Mi'.
A powerful trumpet player with roots in Togo, and proud of them too: he’s been known to wear a Mobutu hat and has coined in jest the slogan 'Make Africa Great Again’. His highly infectious Afrobeat, however, is an extremely faithful interpretation, influenced by such greats as Fela Kuti and Tony Allen, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela of course, Salif Keita, and Mory Kanté. He’s finally completed his first ‘full’ album. We are expecting a lot of people both in front of the stage and on it.
SUSOBRINO in the club as part of the 'Rebel Up! label night'
SUSOBRINO is the alter ego of 24-year-old producer and instrument collector Bart Van Obbergen. His Bolivian roots have inspired his passion for exotic sounds, especially traditional South American percussive music. He blends his own field recordings and other music with digital ingredients into a rhythmic and energetic soundtrack.
