AB40 CHURCH CONCERT: A Winged Victory For The Sullen + Daniel Wohl

Neoclassical ambient splendour brought to you by Ninja Tune

AB goes to church

'Holy shit, Jesus is hip again!' headlined De Morgen recently, after the American première of Kanye Wests gospel project Sunday Service op Coachella Arts & Music Festival. Various church communities adroitly responded and opened their doors to welcome the new Messiah. So it’s time for AB to embrace the spirit of the times and put together a series of church concerts. After the successful concerts by Stars Of The Lid (’16), the two tributes to Jóhann Jóhannsson (’18 and ‘19) in the Béguinage Church (officially: The Church of Saint John the Baptist at the Béguinage), AB heads back for a fourth time to the place that once housed the largest Beguine community in the country. AWVFTS will be extended to 8 musicians for this tour. Echo Collective on strings and a brass section will join the two original members.

The Béguinage Church (Begijnhof 2062, 1000 Brussel) is a 10 minute walk (or: 750 metres according to Google Maps) from AB.

A Winged Victory for the Sullen – centred around the duo Adam Wiltzie (Stars of the Lid) and pianist Dustin O’Halloran – is still one of the flagbearers of contemporary neo-classical splendour. Noteworthy: Their latest album ‘The Undivided Five’ is out on England’s Ninja Tune label. What’s more, the album is inspired by Swedish artist Hilma af Klint who is a member of the female collective ‘The Five’.

French Brooklyn-resident and composer Daniel Wohl will be opening the evening. Described by NPR as ‘A sorcerer of electroacoustic music.’ and door Pitchfork as ‘an original voice.’

Kurt Overbergh: 'AWVFTS is delightful dip in which time stands still. The ultimate prescription for compensating hectic times.’

One of the best concerts I’ve seen in a long time...the lights and the setlist were magical. Loved the fact we could buy wheat beer inside the church btw :D Only issue I guess was the cold inside the church, maybe get two of those fan heaters next time that you could have had running until just before the show started perhaps, but anyway we were warned beforehand on your latest e-mail so that didn’t bother me that much. Thanks for an amazing night to the band and AB crew!!

Beautiful concert, the atmosphere was magical and very eerie. Amazing job from the performers, sound engineers, lights... it was quite cold inside the church but totally worth it. Thank you for sharing your world with us. I will definitely want to see you guys again !

The cold didn't trouble me, even at minus zero degrees it would have been worth it. The Stars of The Lid concert was more intimate and mesmerizing but this came close to Adams previous performance. Echo Collective seems to be always present on these concerts.

Musique somptueuse dans un cadre idéal.

A summer gig in that church would have been ideal.

The concert would have been fantastic if there was not so cold in the church
