Formidable: Francophone music in the spotlight
Did you know that about half of the AB audience is French-speaking? This is also reflected on our stage. Francophone music is an essential part of our programming. Programmer Irene shares some of her top picks: "from the fresh French pop of our young prodigy Pierre De Maere or the tormented French artist CHARLES, to the best French rap from past and present (PEET, Swing, JeanJass, Pyo, Makala…), there is plenty of choice for every kind of Frenchie-lover!"
The rise of a new generation of young, often female, francophone pop artists is one of the most striking trends in the European music world. These artists combine the rich tradition of the French chanson with modern electropop, indie rock, R&B, and hip-hop. Think of the rebellious pop phenomenon Miki, Camille Yembe, a singer-songwriter from Molenbeek, CHARLES, who is back with a poppier sound, and TeddyBear, who effortlessly weaves chanson, pop, rap, and electronica together. We are also looking forward to the next steps of Marie Mignon, who is rapidly building a solid live reputation.
French rap also remains a staple. For years, Brussels and French rappers have been finding their way to AB. And that’s not changing anytime soon! For instance, we are welcoming back Brussels rapper Peet, who turns every concert into a party with his relatable mix of humor, melancholy, and poetry. JeanJass and Swing, both icons of Belgian rap, will also be playing a home game at AB soon!
