Poetic activist hip-hop

Zambian Sampa Tembo fights for equality with her activist rap songs. The 25-year-old singer grew up in Botswana and later went to study in Australia, where her interest in music reared its head. Contrary to what her name would have you suspect, Sampa is not concerned with feeding her ego, it has an other goal. ‘I think people see it as ego when it’s totally the opposite,’ says Sampa. ‘The amount of newness ‘in being’ a professional artist engulfed me, so I put it at the end of my name for something to strive towards: the greatest version of myself.’

Down Under, she is seen as the future of hip-hop. (Joey Bada$$ and Kendrick have outed themselves as fans too!) In the meantime, she is now ready to take over the rest of the world with the indestructible singles ‘Energy’ and ‘Final Form’.

Sampa brings us an unbelievably interesting mix of hip-hop with jazz, raw funk and African influences. As far as we’re concerned she’s on her way to becoming ‘The Great(est)’!

In the press ‘It's her first new release in 2019, and signals where she could be about to go next. Bold, funky, and triumphant, it finds Sampa The Great drawing from her wealth of hip-hop knowledge to craft something deeply personal.’ – Clash
