Traditional American folk for future generations
The 2018 album ‘The Invisible Comes to Us’ (Smithsonian Folkways Recordings) by American duo Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle skillfully succeeded in making music that is rooted in the American folk tradition sound fresh and extremely contemporary. By making use of wind instruments, sequencers, synths and loopers, they blew new life into old folk ballads and Appalachian music. In doing so, they became pioneers of a new draft of American folk musicians.
If there’s a remake of the excellent documentary series ‘American Epic’ in 2070, then Anna & Elizabeth are sure to be amongst the protagonists.
