Concert by one of the best known Polish bands that successfully combines traditional music with modern sounds and rock aesthetics. Zakopower’s music, described by some as folk rock, cannot be classified in a simple way. Inspired by the traditional music of Podhale (a mountainous region in the south of Poland), their music contains both elements of rock, jazz influences and even African beats, which give an authentic, unique and extremely explosive mixture. Musical energy is Zakopower’s showcase, which is reflected in the group’s name. The name is also a wordplay referring to the name of the city of Zakopane, the winter capital of Poland situated in the Tatra Mountains.
The charismatic lead singer, Sebastian Karpiel-Bułecka, just like most of members of the group, comes from the Podhale region and identifies himself strongly with its culture. Zakopower’s repertoire includes characteristic highlander rhythms and traces of traditional songs, but thanks to original compositions and arrangements they achieve distinctively contemporary sound. Zakopower uses traditional, folk instruments (violin, basses) alongside trumpets, guitars, synthesizers, drums and expressive vocals.
The concert is organised within the framework of Małopolska Region Days in Brussels, under the patronage of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council 2011.
