ConcertThe 25-year-old Simbi ‘Simz’ Ajikawo proves herself to be an exceptional MC on ‘GREY Area’. Her pointed lyrics combine perfectly with the juicy basslines and funky beat. On this third album, the London rapper enters into battle with her mental health and takes a swing at the society that wants to rein her (as woman) in: ‘I don’t need stress, that stress/ I’m a boss in a fucking dress’ is to be heard in ‘Boss’. For the r&b and soul-vibe on the album, Simbi called upon Michael Kiwanuka, Little Dragon and fantastic up-and-coming singer Cleo Sol.
Her ‘no nonsense’ approach impresses. Kendrick Lamar and JAY Z already let us know that they’re fans. Rightly so too! ‘GREY Area’ is one of the albums of 2019 now already.
