BEACH HOUSE
Sometimes a year in pop has its own rightful owner. And in 2010 the owner is none less than Baltimore’s own indie dream pop duo Beach House. The words of praise coming from Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold (with whom they toured in 2009) initiated a true buzz. But with the release of their third album ‘Teen Dream’ and the international critical claim that went with it they virtually effortlessly met everyone’s expectations. How about live? Well, in Europe they captivated audience by audience during a sell out release club tour which earned them supports for among others Grizzly Bear and Vampire Weekend and spots on the biggest European summer festivals. In a nutshell this is how in 2010 Beach House – founded in 2006 – suddenly got cool, hip and even hyped. But for this one time it is truly deserved. Under layers of synths, organs and reverb guitars stand out perfectly crafted pop songs with touching lyrics and catchy choruses. Add to that charismatic front lady Victoria Legrand’s painstakingly beautiful vocals and the inventive guitar and synth parts of Alex Legrand and you’re going from hype to keeper. Beach House is going to be a keeper and you will be able to witness why.
CARIBOU
Here’s a fact. It is hard these days not go wild over multi-instrumentalist-producer-songwriter-singer-arranger-composer Dan Snaith a.k.a. Caribou, a.k.a. the late Manitoba – up until he was sued by Handsome Dick Manitoba (front man of American punk bank The Dictators) for using the same name. What’s in a name, right? Either way, under the moniker CARIBOU Snaith has already released several albums that most notably balance between shoegaze, krautrock and sixties psych pop. On his latest effort ‘Swim’ (rated 8.4 by Pitchfork) Snaith wanted to record dance music “that sounds like it’s made out of water rather than made out of metallic stuff like most dance music does”. Organic dance in other words. Among his fans are The Flaming Lips (who invited Caribou to New York when they were curators of All Tomorrow’s Parties) and Canada (yes, the country), where Caribou received the prestigious Polaris Music Prize (the equivalent of the British Mercury Music Prize). On stage Caribou will be performing as a four piece.
JUNIP feat. JOSÉ GONZÁLEZ
If we could ask one thing: please don’t see Junip as a José González’ side project. Sure, this band includes the Swedish singer-songwriter’s mesmerizing trademark voice and guitar picking but boy is it even more than that. Junip - including childhood friend Elias Araya on drums and Tobias Winterkorn on keyboards - actually formed long before González’ first solo album came out. Unfortunately, due to the songwriter’s extensive touring their plans for recording a debut album were continuously put on the shelf. In 2010 “Fields” finally came out, an album made by passionate and patient people meticulously giving every note, every sound and every word its rightful place. Live they’re a four piece and they take you on an adventurous trip from the first to the final note. So, if we could ask just one more thing: whatever you do, please do not miss this.
SLEEPY SUN
With their hearts, minds and even clothing style fully drenched into seventies psychedelic rock California’s Sleepy Sun just can’t help but being who they are and playing what they play. Audiences all over picked up on this as they did on the six-piece’s intense live performances, centered around vintage guitar sounds and the beautifully haunting harmonies of Bret Constantino and Rachel Fannan. Despite their two strong ATP releases ‘Embrace’ and ‘Fever’ and a collaboration with hip English electronic collective U.N.K.L.E, it’s still primarily the strength of their live shows that keeps stirring critics as well as granting them prestigious opening slots for the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Mudhoney and Autolux. People who saw the band at this year’s Pukkelpop festival definitely know what we’re talking about.
