KYLE DIXON & MICHAEL STEIN PERFORMING THE MUSIC OF 'STRANGER THINGS'

In 2018 haalde AB voor het eerst de Texaanse synth wizards Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein (VS) naar België in het kader van het BRDCST-festival. Aanleiding: hun ronduit superbe soundtrack van de populaire science fictionreeks Stranger Things. Zeg maar: een van de meest succesvolle series annex kijkcijferkanonnen uit de recente Netflixgeschiedenis.

Opvallend: net zoals pakweg de iconische soundtracks van Twin Peaks (door Angelo Badalamenti), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (door Ennio Morricone) of het werk van John Carpenter, lijkt de muziek van Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein wel onlosmakelijk verbonden met Stranger Things. Meer zelfs: zonder deze soundtrack geen Stranger Things.

Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein - die overigens ½ deel uitmaken van het synthkwartet S U R V I V E - kregen voor hun werk flink wat erkenning, waaronder enkele Grammy Award-nominaties voor Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. Ze verzilverden ook een Emmy Award - de meest prestigieuze Amerikaanse televisieprijs, vergelijkbaar met de Oscar voor film - voor Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.

De reviews van hun soundtrack logen er niet om. Pitchfork: “It’s a score that understands the difference between ‘retro’ and ‘timeless,’ opting for a cold, analog precision that feels both old and startlingly new.”

In 2019 werden Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein - naast onder anderen Thundercat, SOPHIE, Jungle, James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) en 2manydjs - uitgenodigd door Chic’s Nile Rodgers die het prestigieuze festival Meltdown cureerde. 

The Guardian hierover in een ****-recensie: “The duo quickly prove that they’re about more than just mood-setting for Eleven and co’s antics, leaning heavily into the sonic savagery of their more nightmarish motifs from the show. Synths shudder, simmer and hiss and build towards cacophonous climaxes, elevated by impressive visuals: Stein and Dixon are barely visible throughout, hidden in a wreckage of frayed cables, behind clouds of smoke and glitching red lights.”
