In juni verscheen ‘Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive!, het nieuwe album van Horse Lords.
De pers over ‘Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive!’:
- ‘Accompanied by woodwinds and horns and, for the first time, vocals, the Baltimore rock band returns with its prettiest and most welcoming music to date. This is surely the gentlest and prettiest Horse Lords album, and maybe their first to conjure nature’s ceaseless motion instead of the kind found in city blocks.’ – 7.6 Pitchfork
- ‘On Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive!, Horse Lords’ sixth album since 2012, they introduce another new element: the human voice. This hardly constitutes a shift away from their mathematical inclinations toward pop-oriented accessibility. Evoking both Sacred Harp choral singing and the otherworldly ululations of Meredith Monk, Nina Guo and Evelyn Saylor’s vocal contributions are largely utilised in much the same disorienting way as Bernstein’s blurts of alto sax, and further blasts by guest horn players Madison Greenstone and Weston Olencki throughout.’ – Uncut
- ‘Their work brings together Steve Reich’s minimalism, African polyrhythms, microtonality and just intonation, algorithmic composition and a deep fascination with American folk traditions. Yet despite the complexity of these ingredients, Horse Lords rarely sound academic. Their music operates on a physical rather than an analytical level.’ – The Quietus
- ‘Tight, interlocking rhythms. Raw microtonality etched on the edges of a pitch. Repetition of a phrase until it melts. A palette of guitar, drums, saxophone, and electronics. Freedom found in limitation; wildness unearthed in the frenzy of a really good riff teetering on the edge of explosion.’ – The Road to Sound
STNT.org
