Príncipe - 15th anniversary: “The sound of Lisbon ghettos”

AB heeft de afgelopen jaren haar grote voorliefde voor het Portugese label Príncipe meermaals getoond door opwindende passages te hosten van Príncipe-pioniers als o.a. Nídia (in 2017 nog present in AB onder de naam Nídia Minaj), DJ Marfox, Dj N***a Fox, Dj Firmeza, Dj Nervoso, DJ Lycox, Dj Danifox en Xexa. In 2026 viert het label haar 15de verjaardag. Een mijlpaal die AB niet zomaar wil laten voorbij gaan.

Príncipe is naar eigen zeggen nog steeds “fully dedicated to releasing 100% real contemporary dance music coming out of Lisbon, its suburbs, projects & slums.” Hun releases worden steeds mooi vorm gegeven door hun graphic inhouse designer en mede-labelbaas Márcio Matos. Spin omschreef de rauwe sound van Príncipe ooit treffend als ‘An ultra-vivid hybrid of grime and trance.’ en FACT Magazine als ‘The sound of Lisbon ghettos.’ Pitchfork: “The label specializes in a high-energy amalgam of African dance styles known as batida.” Zeg maar: hedendaagse techno en house geïmpregneerd met Angolese genres als uptempo kuduro (vrij vertaald: ‘harde kont’) en eerder sensuele stijlen als  kizomba (Angola) en tarraxinha beats. ‘This is our grime'’ vatte Príncipe-pionier Dj Marfox – die met Eu Sei Quem Sou EP voor de eerste Príncipe-release ooit tekende – het ooit betekenisvol samen.

DJ DANIFOX

DJ Danifox (PT) - zoon van Angolese ouders - is zondermeer een van de sterkhouders van Príncipe. Zijn suffix fox is een bewuste knipoog en eerbetoon aan Príncipe-pionier DJ Marfox. Daniel Veiga – zijn echte naam - maakt tevens deel uit van van Tia Maria Produções (met o.a. DJ Lycox) en van de supergroep O Ghettão (met ook Dj N***a Fox en Dj Firmeza als Heilige Drievuldigheid). Boomkat over zijn debuut Ansiedade (2023): “Ansiedade is another one of those perfect deployments from Príncipe, full of Afro-diasporic, rhythmic psychedelic energies spliced with electronic echoes of Portuguese fado’s melancholic blooz.”
 
DJ NARCISO

Dj Narciso (PT) - lid van het batida collectief RS Produções – kon men in 2025 moeilijk van luiheid betichten. Via Príncipe verscheen zijn LP Diferenciado en de EP Capítulo Experimental. Via het gerenommeerde Chinese label SVBKVLT verscheen dan weer de excellente EP Dentro de Mim. The Quietus: “With Dentro De Mim, DJ Narciso has not just conjured up a brilliant mile-a-minute dance record, but one that also shines a light on the breadth and brilliance of batida, Portugal’s most exciting musical export.” Op zijn DJ-CV prijken o.a. prestigieuze festivals als Unsound, Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here en het fameuze Nyege Nyege Festival. HELVIOFOX

De jongste Príncipe-telg - Helviofox (PT) - telt amper 20 lentes, is het jonge broertje van  de Angolese/Portugese producers Dadifox en Erycox en “learned how to make beats before most of us had finished figuring out how to spell Autechre.” Zijn debuut-EP Rodeado de Batida (2025) bevat “a battery of piquant batida, downtempo kuduro and dubwise experimentation snatched from drill, Afrobeats and Afrohouse. In other words - deadly and deep madness to file somewhere between Carl Craig, Nidia and Lechuga Zafiro.” aldus Boomkat.
