De Zuid-Afrikaans drummer Asher Gamedze liet voor het eerst van zich horen op Angel Bat Dawid’s The Oracle (2019) dat verscheen op Chicago’s finest: het superbe (jazz)label International Anthem (zie ook: Alabaster DePlume, Jaimie Branch, Ben LaMar Gay). Gamedze absorbeert op unieke wijze de muziek van jazziconen als The Art Ensemble of Chicago en John Coltrane en combineert dat met een scherp politiek bewustzijn.

Zijn debuut Dialectic Soul (2020) belandde dat jaar meteen in de lijst van beste jazzalbums van The New York Times. Die schreef “A debut that augurs more brilliance ahead.” Opvolger Turbulence and Pulse (2023) leverde meteen het bewijs: “It’s a magnificent, gutsy, stirring piece of work, authentic to its core." Naast zijn 10-koppig ensemble Black Lungs, zijn quintet Another Time Ensemble en zijn Turbulence and Pulse Quartet, lanceert Gamedze nu A Semblance een nieuwe stap in zijn artistieke groei. Op Instagram omschrijft Gamedze a semblance als = (new band + tunes) × (approach/search).

Online platform Cape Creative Collective zag hen reeds aan het werk in Kaapstad en schreef: “An insinuation of John Coltrane here, a mention of the Charles Mingus madness there, a wave of Stan Getz’s mellow mood … It’s uncharted territory. It’s magnificent. It’s the most interesting, invigorating and new music being made in the world at the moment.”
