Une impressionnante collection d’art dans un ancien entrepôt industriel, près de l’AB

Il existe encore des endroits de la capitale belge inexplorés par le grand public. En voici un parfait exemple : l’imposante VanhaerentsArtCollection. Une véritable perle cachée, installée dans un ancien bâtiment industriel du quartier Dansaert à Bruxelles, à deux pas de l’AB.

C’est son amour pour le cinéma expérimental qui a conduit Walter Vanhaerents vers l’œuvre d’Andy Warhol dans les années 70, et par extension vers le pop art. (Vanhaerents considère d’ailleurs toujours Warhol comme son mentor.) Depuis lors, la famille collectionne l’art contemporain en gardant le regard tourné vers l’avenir.

Désormais renommée, la collection est devenue l’une des plus grandes collections privées d’Europe. Elle comprend des œuvres d’icônes telles qu’Ai Weiwei, Matthew Barney, Olafur Eliasson, Gilbert & George, Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley (qui expose actuellement au KMSKA), David Hockney, Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Cindy Sherman et Bill Viola.

La VanhaerentsArtCollection a ouvert ses portes en 2007, année où l’épouse de Walter a fêté son 60e anniversaire. Au cours des dix premières années, la culture pop a fortement influencé les expositions, au point qu’elles portaient les noms de chansons pop emblématiques comme Disorder in the House de Warren Zevon, Sympathy for the Devil des Rolling Stones et Man in the Mirror de Michael Jackson.

Le Financial Times a joliment décrit cette approche atypique : “The first shock is the ‘Viewing Depot’, designed by the Belgian architecture firm Robbrecht and Daem to resemble the open storage of museums such as the Schaulager in Basel. As you enter the refurbished 1926 industrial building, spread over three floors and occupying around 3,500 sq m, many sculptures are still in crates, swathed in transparent plastic. Paintings are kept on storage racks, but can be pulled out for viewing.”

BRDCST est flatté de pouvoir investir ce musée. Des concerts y seront organisés, mais les visiteurs de BRDCST pourront également admirer les œuvres avant, pendant et après les performances.
