DESCRIPTION:In het recente verleden stonden ze allebei op het AB podium:\nmeesterpianist Brad Mehldau (steeds met zijn trio) alsook de\nstraffe saxofonist Joshua Redman (met zijn Elastic Band).\nMaar voor het eerst staan beide heren nu ook samen als duo\nop één en hetzelfde podium. Eén ding – naast eerdere\nsamenwerkingen - hebben deze jazzmuzikanten alvast met\nelkaar gemeen: hun open mind. Zo flirt Brad Mehldau naast\njazz (en klassiek) ook vaak met pop. Denk maar aan zijn\nsublieme versies van Radiohead-songs als 'Paranoid\nAndroid' en 'Exit Music (For A Film)'\, Nick\nDrake's 'River Man' of The Beatles 'Dear\nPrudence'. Joshua Redman herwerkte op zijn beurt dan\nweer songmateriaal van Sheryl Crow en Led Zeppelin en\nspeelde in het verleden samen met o.a. Flea (Red Hot Chili\nPeppers)\, ?uestlove (The Roots) en Michelle\nN’Degeocello.The Guardian sprak alvast lovende woorden\nover hun recente passage in de Londense Wigmore Hall en\nlauwerde hen met een ****-recensie: “On the duo gig with\nRedman\, Mehldau was often able to let his partner's\nbuilt-in swing release his most whimsical side.\nCharacteristically audacious departures from the harmony\ninflected his first solo on the opening ‘Don't Be\nSad’\, while Redman started to relax and lengthen his\nlines on the following rather mournful waltz. Charlie\nParker's ‘Donna Lee’ began deep in the tenor's\nregister\, and the two swapped phrases through the improv.\nRedman conjured a beautiful\, circular-breathed overture to\n‘The Folks Who Live On the Hill’\, and steadily revealed\nmore of his expressive tone-colouring all the way through to\nthe hypnotically rocking encore.”Wedden dat deze unieke\nontmoeting vuurwerk zal geven?
