A richly filled, varied and, most importantly, excellent Belgian programme on stage in AB. That’s what we’re aiming for in November and December. Below, an overview of the highlights, for which you can miraculously still buy tickets. Be quick!
We open this Belgian season with STIJN PLAYS STIJN (21.11). No Stijn plays Prince this time, but rather own songs amongst a battery of electronica, consisting of retro synths and throbbing drum machines, reinforced by his voice.
On his new album, an other wonderful voice performs subtle arrangements stripped of frills. We’re talking about JASPER STEVERLINCK (17.12) (link), our very own Jeff Buckley, who will no doubt have the velvety acoustics of the Main Hall Henry Le Bœuf under his command. An exclusive concert in Bozar, organised by AB.
That same evening, BENT VAN LOOY (17.12) will occupy the AB Theater for the launch of his new album ‘Yours Truly’. Upbeat tracks for all who warm themselves on perfect Flemish pop.
The following artist made a difference with hits like ‘Wrong’, ‘Lost & Blown Away’ and ‘The Best Is Yet To Come’ and, after four years, has now released a new album. The only indoor show by NOVASTAR (20.12) will take place in our Main Hall. None less than Geike Arnaert will provide the support-act, so be there on time.
True Belpop Fan? Where better than AB for the Radio 1 celebration of old and new Belgian music! In a one-off RADIO 1 BELPOP-SESSIE (03.12), our collective memory will be profoundly jogged. With curious tales about and live songs from Novastar, Salvatore Adamo, Black Box Revelation, The Scabs, SX, Liliane Saint-Pierre, Arno and Wannes Cappelle (Het Zesde Metaal). Be there!
Youthful hip-hop power
Aside from veterans, there is also youthful talent that receives a forum in AB. So WOODIE SMALLS (22.11), the young hip-hopper from Sint-Niklaas, will appear in AB Club. He just recently released the new single ‘Never Trust Again’, a foretaste of his second album that is soon to be released. A more seasoned musician, whose debut album was crowned ‘Best Belgian album of the year’ in 2009, raps with a sharp tongue in French. VEENCE HANAO (24.11) appears in AB at the side of Le Motel, the sound architect behind Roméo Elvis and special guest Brihang. Veence Hanao and Le Motel released an album together this year, a Belgian hip-hop gem.
On the same evening, for a friendly price, you can head to AB Club to hear the new draft of Belgian and international producers, DJs and bands, at JH TONGELUK PRESENTS ALIA B2B KRESHIK, SUSOBRINO, 2 TIMES NOTHING & MORE (24.11). They are all inspired by diverse genres like hip-hop, jazz, funk and global sounds. An evening for the true adventurer.
The more gentle stuff
Over the coming weeks, there is also something to see in AB for the delicate hearts amongst us. THE GOLDEN GLOWS (22.11 + 20.12) (link) kick off the project ‘The Anthology of American Folk Music’ in AB Salon. They rework songs from Harry Smith’s famous anthology as if it were a contemporary masterpiece. What’s more, these concerts are free of charge, so there’s no excuse to not allow yourself to be schooled in this fine piece of musical history.
The last one has only just taken place and there’s already a new one on the way. The last Coca-Cola Session of the year brings artists YUSUF + AUDRI (08.12) to AB. Yusuf is called ‘the new Tamino’ and has a mysterious, intense, pop sound. Audri was picked up by LeFtO and just released her first EP ‘Fool’s Gold’. Two names to keep an eye on.
If you like elegant Americana, then you’ve surely already heard of DOUGLAS FIRS (18.12). In October 2017 the band yielded a full and very content AB Club. Most likely in a jam-packed AB Box this time.
No less than 3 Belgian bands say farewell in AB over the coming months. So DIABLO BLVD (10.12), the heavy-metal band encompassing Alex Agnew stops after 13 successful years. Want to see this band at work for a very last time? There are still a few tickets available. Brussels’ SOLDOUT (11.12) (link) has been around for 15 years and is calling it a day. Their catchy melodies peppered with ‘80s new wave will resound for the last time in our Main Hall. Belgian blues pride GUY VERLINDE & THE MIGHTY GATORS (20.12) mark their 10-year jubilee with an Anniversary Tour. The last stop on that tour is in AB, where you can enjoy their energetic performance one last time.
Basically, something Belgian on the menu for everyone in November and December. Book your tickets now and experience the music of our land live in AB.
