This spring there will again be exciting, danceable & progressive jazz bands on stage at AB!
Our Artistic Director and notorious jazz-lover Kurt Overbergh described it like this: “Iggy Pop adores Zoh Amba. Thom Yorke embraces Tom Skinner. José James honours the queen of neo soul Erykah Badu. And Ezra Collective and The Comet is Coming play for full venues and young audiences everywhere. Basically: jazz sounds more universal than ever!”
JAZZZZZAWAY!
A selection of what’s on offer:
‘A Late Night Show with Zoh Amba, Chris Corsano & Micah Thomas’ (SAT 4 FEB 23)
After the Avisai Cohen Trio concert on Feb 4, you can catch ‘A Late Night Show with Zoh Amba, Chris Corsano & Micah Thomas’ in the AB Club.
At this young age, the 22-year-old Zoh Amba has already received the blessing of none other than John Zorn.
Amba grew up in Tennessee, played guitar and wrote songs until Charlie Parker crossed her path and she instantly fell for the timbre of the saxophone.
Zoh Amba blows furiously and elegantly. According to our Kurt Overbergh, Zoh Amba is on the verge of a major breakthrough!
Ezra Collective ( SUN 5 FEB 23)
On Sunday 5 February, AB will keep you warm with the festive melting pot placed at the crossroads of jazz, afro-beat and hip-hop from London’s Ezra Collective.
Their latest album 'Where I'm Meant To Be’ is being showered with stars by the press. The Guardian described it in a 5-star review as ‘’brilliant” and “This sophisticated second album from the five instrumentalists could just see them cross over to the big league.”
On & On: José James Sings Badu (WED 1 MARCH 23)
On Wednesday 1 March, José James pays tribute to the 'Queen of Neo Soul' Erykah Badu.
José James: “It’s simple, jazz singing has always been about interpreting the highest level of standards of your time. And for my generation Erykah Badu has been one of the most innovative and incisive songwriters. Her work has proven to be groundbreaking in a social, musical and artistic sense.”
The Comet Is Coming (SUN 2 APR 23)
On Sunday 2 April, we pull out our ‘spaciest’ dance-moves for London-based electro-jazz trio The Comet Is Coming.
Expect deliciously driving cosmic jazz indebted to the one and only sun god: Sun Ra.
The Comet Is Coming, with Shabaka Hutchings on sax, is the most swinging planet that you don’t want to miss.
