SUMMARY:Tony Rice Unit - Manzanita - 33 1/3 - Classic Album Listenin
g Sessions
LOCATION:AB Salon - zittend (Steenstraat 11\, 1000 Bruxelles)
DESCRIPTION:Please note: this a listening session\, not a concert!\nJohan Heldenberg is best known as actor and singer/guitarist\nof The Broken Circle Breakdown Bluegrass Band\, but he is\nalso a compiler of Closing Time Country on Radio 1 and a\ngreat fan and connoisseur of the better bluegrass and\ncountry.As introduction to the concert by The Broken Circle\nBreakdown Bluegrass Band\, he will introduce his favourite\nbluegrass album. Manzanita by Tony Rice Unit is considered\nto be the great breakthrough of for Tony Rice and it caused\nquite a stir in country circles when it was released because\nthere was not a banjo to be heard on it. Inconceivable in\nthose days. He gathered a long list of great bluegrass names\nto accompany himself on the recordings (the likes of Sam\nBush\, Ricky Skaggs and Jerry Douglas). The album confirmed\nRice's virtuosity as a guitarist\, singer and\nsongwriter. It is considered to be a genuine classic in its\ngenre and so it's the ideal album to include in the\nClassic Album Listening Sessions series. The session will be\nintroduced (in Dutch) by Johan Heldenberg. 33\n1/3 – Classic Album Listening SessionsThe idea behind Huis\n33 1/3 is as simple as can be: music lovers gathering to\nlisten to a 'classic' album - uninterrupted and in\nthe most ideal circumstances possible (technically\,\nsurroundings\,..) - always introduced by an adept of the\nalbum in question. The intention of this new series is to\noffer an alternative to the manner in which the musical\nexperience has evolved over recent years. By listening to\nstrongly compressed MP3s\, YouTube films\, or to sites like\nSpotify\, with small earphones or via laptop speakers we\nmiss out on essential elements of the music\, often without\nrealising it.Many albums were created as an artwork in\nthemselves and so deserve to be listened to in their\nentirety. A great deal of attention was often paid to\nobtaining the best possible sound quality\, the artwork\,\nthe order of the songs\, the mood of the songs and the\n‘story’ the artist wanted to involve the listener in. In\nmany cases\, no effort was spared to record the albums in\nthe best studios\, in order to make use of the best sounding\nmixing tables\, microphones\, pre-amps\, compressors\,\nreverbs\, etc... All of this is completely destroyed in a\nfew mouse-clicks.During the Huis 33 1/3 sessions we will\nlisten to an album in its entirety – without interruption\nand with the best possible technical means – and in that\nway attempt to experience the album in the way originally\nintended when it was recorded\, mastered and released. \n
