SUMMARY:Tom McRae
LOCATION:AB Grote zaal (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:British romantic Tom McRae has just fired off his fifth\nalbum upon the world: ‘Alphabet of Hurricanes’. Just as\non his previous albums\, we hear songs that penetrate deep\ninto the soul\, songs about luck in love but also the\nassociated pain. Tom again elevates himself to unseen\nheights with his soft\, fragile voice. His fantasies are far\nremoved from the often airy entertainment that characterises\nthe current decade. He often names performers like Nick\nCave\, Tom Waits\, Bob Dylan\, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and\nthe just recently deceased Vic Chesnutt\, as sources of\ninspiration but British author Simon Armitage (who provided\nMcRae's PR texts this time) speaks above all of ‘a\nlexicon of the soul’s meteorology’. We couldn't have\nworded it better ourselves. After a brilliant concert in the\nCirque Royal this spring\, he'll be visiting the\nDranouter Festival this summer and will then treat the fans\nagain on Monday 11 October\, this time in the AB. Support\nact will be American singer-songwriter Brian Wright (short\nfor Brian Wright & The Waco Tragedies). His most recent\nsolo album is titled ‘House On Fire’. His songs are\ndeeply rooted in American musical traditions. That dark\nbaritone ... those pitch-black lyrics ... those wall-to-wall\narrangements ... that must be Sivert Höyem. Who? Sivert was\nthe impressive frontman of the unfortunately now defunct\nMadrugada. With Madrugada he bestowed humanity with 6\nalbums\, of which ‘Grit’ (2002) and ‘The Deep End’\n(2005) managed to earn and eternal place in our record\ncabinet. On his own\, he now has 3 albums to his name. The\nmost recent album is the acclaimed ‘Moon Landing’. The\nCutting Edge website wrote of it: ‘Even just his dark\,\nsoothing and velvety voice\, loaded with sadness and\nlonging\, already almost guarantees a fine album’. The\nSivert Höyem concert is a part of a large-scale\,\nyear-end\, Norwegian offensive organised by the AB\, Bozar\nand Cinematek... all under the title of Norway Now. So there\nare more than enough good reasons to head down to the AB on\ntime on Monday 11 October\, as Höyem will already be on\nstage at 7pm\, on the dot. \n
