DESCRIPTION:One of the series in noteworthy British magazine The Wire is\n‘The Primer’. In it\, a journalist\, musician or writer\nimmerses themselves in the most important albums of a\nnot-so-obvious artist\, genre or trend. In collaboration\nwith The Wire\, we're giving this series a live\nextension and we invite the writers to in Huis23. In\nrelation to the Nils Frahm and Lubomyr Melnik concert in the\nseries Silence Is Sexy\, Louise Gray will be presenting a\nnew The Wire Primer to Huis23. There's no more\nappropriate manner to introduce this concert evening (with\ntwo intriguing contemporary composers) than with a reading\non the master of silence: John Cage.John Cage’s (1912 –\n1992) influence on modern music is difficult to judge and he\nis generally considered to one of the biggest revivers of\n(classical) music in the 20th century. With compositions\nlike First Construction in Metal\, Sonates and Interludes\nfor Prepared Piano and of course 4’33”\, Cage radically\nchanged the musical concept and our awareness of music.In\nher The Primer (published in The Wire # 161 from July 1997)\nLouise Gray sketches a fine image of the life and career of\nthis interesting inventor/composer (as his teacher in the\n'30's\, Arnold Schönberg\, referred to him). Louise\nGray is freelance journalist from London who is specialised\nin music and visual arts. She has written for various\nBritish papers and magazines (NME\, The Guardian\, New\nStatesman\,…)\, was music critic for The Times and\ncultural correspondent for The Independent On Sunday. At the\nmoment she writes for The Wire\, New Internationals en\nMuseum Journal. She is also\, amongst other things\, curator\nof the annual Latitudes festival.
